The beautifully painted human forms are made anonymous with scratched out faces; their black and white architectural/ engineering works are in ‘unfinished’ Alla Prima state, waiting for their final coat, leaving the bare bones of the work on display.
Russian duo Zaitsev and Androsov have been working together since art school days in 2010. Both graduates of the St Petersburg Art and Industry academy and the Pro Arte Foundation for Culture and Arts; Zaitsev and Androsov's work features themes of transformation, replication and disappearances.
Classical Russian training is evident in their painterly skill, but the work is in no way staid or dull, instead it embraces the monumental recent history of Russia as the main theme.
The beautifully painted human forms are made anonymous with scratched out faces; their black and white architectural/ engineering works are in ‘unfinished’ Alla Prima state, waiting for their final coat, leaving the bare bones of the work on display.
Are the images only half formed or decayed? Were they ever there in the first place? Zaitsev and Androsov address the predicament of understanding what was and what is their country, society and daily life and the enormity of change faced by their generation.
They express and question history, as well as the status quo through their imagery and skill, indeed the role of artist throughout the ages, to great and beautiful effect.
