The United Nations Office at Geneva is very pleased to co-organize this exhibition, along with so many Permanent Missions, D10 Art Space and the LIAN Foundation. This event is conceived as a moment of serenity to lighten up these difficult times during the COVD-19 pandemic.
It is a unique exhibition because for the first time, part of the collection of the Palais des Nations—home to the League of Nations since 1936 and to the United Nations Office at Geneva since 1946—will be on public display at a venue outside of the Palais des Nations.
It is also a unique moment as we celebrate both the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and 100 years of multilateralism in Geneva since the establishment of the League of Nations. Both occasions remind us of the importance of international cooperation and dialogue among nations.
This exhibition is also an opportunity to say thank you to our host country, Switzerland, to the Republic and Canton of Geneva and to the City of Geneva, for their dedication to multilateralism.
“Tout un Monde – l’art du Palais des Nations s’invite en ville” is both a vibrant tribute to the role of art in multilateral diplomacy and a celebration of the historic collection of the Palais des Nations, built during a century of multilateral history. The exhibition includes artworks donated throughout the years by Member States, cultural entities and individual artists.
We have chosen to organize this exhibition this summer as the COVID-19 crisis begins to ease, to send a reminder of the power of art to unite all and promote dialogue among civilizations, even in times of deep uncertainty. Tout un Monde is a strong positive message that art does not exist only for its aesthetic values but also to serve one of the fundamental principles of multilateralism: the unity of humankind in its cultural diversity.
